چکیده

The 62nd annual Montagna Symposium on the Biology of Skin, “Light and Skin: How Light Sustains, Damages, Treats, Images and Modifies Skin Biology,” was held October 10–14, 2013, in Stevenson, Washington. Life and skin evolved under sunlight; dermatology will forever be entwined with photomedicine. We routinely use microscopy, optical diagnostics, phototherapy, photodynamic therapy and lasers while dealing with melanoma, nonmelanoma skin cancer, photosensitivity disorders and photoaging. Moreover, there are misunderstandings, recent surprises, mysteries and challenges. How do the protean cutaneous and systemic effects of light really happen? Exactly what is healthy and unhealthy about light? Can these be separated? What is the ideal sunscreen? What can we “see” inside live skin? Which technologies are pushing the limits for therapy and diagnosis? How to “translate” promising research all the way to practical impact? The Symposium was organized by Molly Kulesz-Martin, and chaired by Rox Anderson with Session Chairs David Fisher, Barbara Gilchrest and Steven Jacques.

Towards Measurement of Polarization Properties of Skin using the Ellipsometry Technique

Introduction: The human skin is an active medium from the optical point of view. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques employing light are increasing. Current optical techniques are based on the measurement of the intensity of reflected absorbed or backscattered light from or within skin. Studies have shown that biological tissues, and in particular skin, demonstrate polarization...

Can Light Emitted from Smartphone Screens and Taking Selfies Cause Premature Aging and Wrinkles?

Since the early days of human life on the Earth, our skin has been exposed to different levels of light. Recently, due to inevitable consequences of modern life, humans are not exposed to adequate levels of natural light during the day but they are overexposed to relatively high levels of artificial light at night. Skin is a major target of oxidative stress and the link between aging and oxidat...

Effects of infrared radiation and heat on human skin aging in vivo.

Sunlight damages human skin, resulting in a wrinkled appearance. Since natural sunlight is polychromatic, its ultimate effects on the human skin are the result of not only the action of each wavelength separately, but also interactions among the many wavelengths, including UV, visible light, and infrared (IR). In direct sunlight, the temperature of human skin rises to about 40 degrees C followi...

Effects of infrared, blue light and UVA-II on human skin

Knowledge about environmental factors that are aggressive to skin has increased in recent years. Although concern previously focused primarily on UVA and UVB, this has broadened to contain damage from pollution, tobacco smoke, other ambient toxins, infrared light, blue light and UVA-II. This article reviews the negative effects of infrared, blue light and UVA-II on skin. Potential protective a...

Possibility of Early Detection of Bovine Mastitis in Dairy Cows Using Thermal Images Processing

Bovine mastitis (BM) is a prevalent condition on dairy farms, affecting both livestock health and reducing profitability. This study investigated the feasibility of diagnosing BM in Holstein dairy cattle using thermography. To increase the detection between healthy cattle and unhealthy one and to better compare the results from thermal images, a number of parameters including somatic cell count...
